Why online travel insurance is cheap.

Are you more or less likely to change your travel activities because you have bought a cheaper travel insurance policy?

You won't change them at all! Think what this means. It means that you will suffer the same instances of loss and you will lose the same amount whether you buy the cheapest or most expensive policy on the market.

How Much Less?

In its simplest terms, if the policy is 20% cheaper then the insurance company has to reduce ALL claims by 20% or reduce the number of claims per policy by 20% - or a combination of these resulting in a net 20% reduction in payments.

So how would this affect me?

By the very nature of insurance, many people pay a small amount of money - so you will save 20% of a small amount of money on your insurance premium. BUT

A few people will suffer substantially larger losses. These people (and you may be one of them) will on average lose 20% of a large amount of money.

How do they do it?

Higher policy excesses.
Applying each excess on a per person per section basis
Lower limits e.g. on baggage
More exclusions
More conditions - making it more likely that you will break them
Relying on your ignorance - if you buy any insurance policy online it is up to you to make the claim and fight your cause.
